Nebulous Infinity by Virtually Competent is a vertical scrolling shoot ‘em up with randomized elements.

DEVELOPER’S DESCRIPTION:

The initial build was made in a week for the 7 Day Roguelike Challenge, but the game is still considered to be in development.

History:

Interested in taking part in the 7 Day Roguelike Challenge, but wanting to create something action-oriented, Eric came up with the idea of doing a scrolling space shooter with randomized elements. The plan was to create a number of level “chunks” that would be spawned randomly during play and randomize item effects (creating an element of risk, as some items could have a negative impact on the player). While the end result was somewhat lacking (only 10 unique level chunks were created and the in-game economy was poorly balanced), the framework laid down in a week’s time was much more scalable and open to tweaking than past projects.

Features:

  • Navigate semi-randomized terrain in your cool spaceship!
  • Eat strange space candies that enhance your abilities!
  • Do business with a one-eyed slime alien!

Controls (Keyboard):

  • Shift – Start/Pause the game
  • Z – Shoot
  • X – Activate Magnet
  • C – Cycle through powerups/bombs
  • Space – Use selected powerup/bomb

Controls (Xbox 360 Gamepad)::

  • Start – Start/Pause the game
  • X button – Shoot
  • A button – Activate Magnet
  • L/R bumpers – Cycle through powerups/bombs
  • Y button – Use selected powerup/bomb

Tips and Tricks:

  • After destroying enemies, activate your magnet to pull credits towards you…collecting a bunch in quick succession will earn you a huge bonus!
  • Sometimes enemies will drop powerups, but crates are guaranteed to have a powerup in them every time! Of course, selling crates at the shop might work out better for you…
  • You can’t tell what a powerup does until you try it or take it to a shop to get it identified. Be careful – they’re not always good!
  • Shops are guaranteed to appear every 5 sectors, but may also appear in normal sectors if you’re lucky. Be sure to buy some Movement Ups if you want to survive the speed increase every sector!
  • Be sure to post your score to Twitter at the end the round to show the other pilots who’s boss!
  • This game can be played with a keyboard under $50.

Nebulous Infinity was made in a week’s time for the 7 Day Roguelike Challenge. We’ve done a lot of work on it since then, but it’s still very much in development. The newest build is playable above, but if you prefer, you can download the original 7DRL build for Windows/Mac/Linux.

PLAYPLAYFUN’S IMPRESSION ON NEBULOUS INFINITY:

Nebulous Infinity is another game by Virtually Competent who are responsible for PlayPlayFun hits like Rough & Tumble and Skull Shot!! This time they bring us a vertical shooter game that is randomly generated which provides tons of replay value.

The game and its mechanic is solid and somewhat challenging. It also features retro pixel art graphics that will make fans of retro games right at home. There are enough variety in the game to keep you coming back for more. Overall, much like Virtually Competent other games, Nebulous Infinity ranks highly in my book.

DEVELOPER’S DESCRIPTION:

Prince Zeldo’s been kidnapped…again. Looks like a job for Lonk, the legendary Heroine of Thyme! Grab your sword and…oh, you forgot it at home? Uh, that’s fine. Probably.

Features:

  • Flap your way through the evil Lord Ganondoof’s castle! Save the prince!
  • Collect ruples because why not? Feed your greed!
  • Steal items from an old man! Wait, how do these things even work?
  • Does this castle have no end? (Spoilers: it does)

Controls:

  • Left-click or Up arrow key to flap/jump/whatever
  • Right-click or Shift key to use an item (if you’ve got an item that can be used!)
  • Scroll wheel or Left/Right arrow keys to cycle between usable items!
  • Double-click or Spacebar on the “Game Over” screen to retry quickly! No time for rest!

DISCLAIMER: While Lonk’s Awakening is heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda series, no assets in the game were directly ripped from any official title produced by Nintendo. This game was built from scratch with entirely original art and audio. Neither Virtually Competent nor Lonk’s Awakening are affiliated with Nintendo.

PLAYPLAYFUN’S IMPRESSION ON LONK’S AWAKENING:

Lonk’s Awakening is straightforward. Everybody knows what it is, but you might have questions that I will try to answer.

Is that… ? Yes

Is it… ? No

How did it… ? I don’t know!

So, my advice, just play and enjoy the game! 🙂

DEVELOPER’S DESCRIPTION:

This game was made in about a week for GBJam 4! Guide bounty huntin’ robot Tumbleweed through the wild west in pursuit of the Roughhouse Gang!

Controls:

  • Spacebar to Start/Restart
  • Arrows to move
  • Z to shoot
  • X to jump
  • Up arrow to interact (climb ladders/enter doors/talk to NPCs)
  • Double tap down arrow to drop through (most) platforms

Help Tumbleweed take down the Roughhouse Gang in this robot western platformer, originally created for GBJam 4! You can see how the game did on its GameJolt voting results page.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to finish more than the first level for the jam version, but we’ve got plenty of content planned for a future update!

PLAYPLAYFUN’S IMPRESSION ON ROUGH & TUMBLE:

Virtually Competent, with their game Rough & Tumble, yet again brings us to revisit our fond memory of the golden era of gaming. With its monochromatic graphic style, as seen in the original GameBoy, Rough & Tumble delivers a seemingly familiar western action platformer game. The control is smooth and the game is quite fun. However, we kind of miss the classic move such as duck and roll. Hopefully this feature will be added in future updates.

The map has plenty places to explore and gives us the feeling that that there are hidden places that we may have missed.

Skullshot by Virtually Competent is a classic platforming action meets goofy physics-based skull tossing.

DEVELOPER’S DESCRIPTION:

Scully never could quite get a head in life…but the afterlife is a different story! Play as Scully the Skeleton, whipping your skull at bats, ghosts, frogs, and pumpkins in a number of tough platforming stages that will put your reflexes to the test! Take it slow and try to get a full combo or go full speed ahead and aim for the best time!

Controls:

  • Skullshot is played with a mouse and keyboard, but we plan on supporting gamepads in the future!
  • WASD moves Scully left and right, up and down. You can also use spacebar to jump!
  • Left click to throw your skull and right click to drop or roll it!
  • After losing your head, pull it back toward you by clicking either mouse button. Just make sure you’re unobstructed and ready to catch it!

How to Play:

  • Throw your skull at baddies to take them out! Destroy all the enemies in a level and you win!
  • Beat the level fast enough to win a medal! Try to beat your friend’s best times!
  • Try to keep your combo running! If your skull takes out an enemy and you don’t pick it up after five seconds, you’ll break your combo. It’s the five second rule!
  • Don’t get hit too many times or you’ll be sent to an early grave…for the second time, from the looks of it!

Tips and Tricks:

  • Did you know? Your head is the smartest part of your body! Your skull will seek out nearby enemies after the first contact, so look for patterns!
  • Maintain a high combo to keep your skull moving fast! You’ll move a little faster without the weight, too!
  • Man, you must have a really heavy head…looks like you can double jump while headless as well!
  • You can only use the recall technique once per throw, but taking out an enemy will restore its use!
  • Even if you’re blocked by a surface, recalling your skull could give it that extra bounce it needs to hit another target!

PLAYPLAYFUN’S IMPRESSION ON SKULLSHOT:

Skullshot is an arcade platformer game that reminds me of the good olden days of 8-bit video games. I fully enjoy playing Skullshot. Let’s us put it this way: If Skullshot were to release during the Nintendo 8-bit NES platform back in its days, Skullshot would have sold a decent amount of copies gathering quite a lot of fans.
